I have seen the Mount Whitney Trial as MWT and MMWT. What does the extra M in MMWT stand for?

It is my understanding that the extra M stands for Main. You will often see people use the term "main trail" when referring to the Mount Whitney Trail, since the John Muir Trail and the North Fork/Mountaineer's Route are also ways to get to the summit.

Other important abbreviations used in these pages:

MR = Mountaineering Route

MR Route = Mountaineering Route Route

Exactly.

And not as bad as, say, "The La Brea Tar Pits."

Main Mt. Whitney Trail (MMWT) is how the Inyo National Forest currently refers to it. My guess is, it is to avoid the confusion with MR and other ways to getting to the summit.
