I'm planning on heading up to Whitney Portal on Sept. 19th, and then getting an overnight pass for the night of the 20th;however, I have had no luck with any cancelations or no shows. If anyone has an overnight pass that they won't be using in September could you please let me know! Any help would be greatfully appreciated!! Thanks

Sept 20 is a Wednesday. All you need to do is show up at the ranger station in Lone Pine on the 19th or 20th, and I'll bet they will have a bucket load of no-shows available.

It is way too early to be looking for cancellations for a month ahead.

Thanks Steve for the info., if you hear anything I would be greatly appreciative if you could let me know. Thanks again. I'll try getting a no show permit if all else fails. Better to try and fail than never have tried at all!!

Should I buy a camping permit now in order to stay one night at Whitney Portal on Sept. 19th?

You do not need to have a reservation for camping at the overnite backpacker's site, just a hundred yards from the trailhead. During the week, it is almost empty each nite.

This link indicates that there are ample slots available for dayhikers during mid-weekdays in September and October
