My brother and I are planning a September hike and are thinking of trying to get one of the camp sites near the trailhead. Do of you have experience with these sites? Is there much competetion and are they decent sites for a one night stay? Or is the family campground down the road better?

The parking lot around the backpacking campsites is often full even if all the backpacker campsites aren't taken. The campsites are perfectly nice if small walk-in campsites with bearboxes & picnic tables available.

I personally prefer the family campground, but keep in mind that half of the campsites there are reservable.
