Pretty easy. Take Highway 168 east from just north of Big Pine. Head up toward Westgard Pass, coming to a steep grade and narrow road. No big RVs.

Come to the White Mountain Peak road, turn left (north) and follow signs to the Bristlecones. Essentially stay on the main road all the way, past where it turns to dirt at about Schulmann Grove. You'll come to the gate at about 11,000 feet. A good passenger vehicle can do this. Be careful to drive around any big rocks. and go slowly, as to not to bash your undercarriage on dips and rises in the road.

The only big junction of note heads right to the Naval Station. Go left or straight here. I can't remember if it was signed. I recall the total one way distance to the gate is some 22 miles (from 168). Don't hold me to this!

Good luck!

Thx It's been several years since I've been up to the pass and Bristlecone area. Thought it was in the general area. Appreciate the reply. I was reading the post regarding the marmots up there. Is it really a problem?

I haven't been up on White Mountain for over 5 years. I didn't see any Marmots on my trip but the message board says they are now a problem.. They must have got relocated from the Whitney area (overcrowding I fiqure)

I saw lots of them last Aug. in the plateau stretch above the lab. I haven't seen too many on Whitney hikes, but a few years ago I discovered one that had staked out a prime panhandling location underneath the Whitney summit rocks.

Javier, Iwas checking the previous post on hiking White Mountain and noticed you just went. Any problems with the marmots where you parked, eating your under carriage wires etc Misha if you're back, how about you? Any problems? Thx Just trying to figure out if its really necessary to "wire the Jeep" to keep the rascals out. Thx Looking forward to seeing your pictures.

Hello Erich,

I parked at the trail head and did not encounter or noticed any marmots there. I did see a few of them however this was well into the hike.
This was a very quiet and paceful hike. I only spoke two other folks.
