For years I've seen those nice cabins fronting the campgrounds at the Portal. Some of them have signs on them indicating they are seasonally owned by someone. But are any of these Whitney Portal cabins for rent, for a few days or a week? I'd love to stay in one, they are all very nice.

oh my gosh, I love those cabins!!!!!
I just looked you all up to find out how much snow is left and if the fish are biting at lone pine lake.
I tried to stay at the cabins and even went to town and consulted with the local realestate people. But no you can not stay there as they are privately owned and no they do not rent them out.
sorry hunny

My family owns a cabin, and most of them you can't rent. If you like them as much as we love ours I would keep your eyes and ears open I know that someone just bought one recently. Well Recently is relative, it was a couple of years ago I think, but my family has had ours since about the 20's so a few years is recent.

Good Luck!

In the summer of 1978, one of the cabins was for sale. I believe it was #18 or 19. It was a small cabin, but beautiful. The owner wanted $19,000. My father and I traveled up to the Portal and looked at the cabin. Not to go into much details, we didn't buy the cabin... a father-son disagreement. Every day I kick myself. The boot mark is there for everyone to see.

Just keep in mind that the cabins are on Federal lease land with a 30 year lease. Renewable at the discretion of the National Forest Service. However, they automatically renew.

Excuse me while I kick myself again!!!!

Yes the cabins are on a lease and it is about to be renewed. We have a meeting with the Forest Service and we also help them out and comply with all of their requests, so it looks good for renewal!

Also I don't think that they would not renew the lease as the cabins not only generate more people and revenue for the area, but they have also become part of the landscape.

There are alot. For the most visible ones (the around the capsites) there are about 10 and then the road goes up and there are more. You can a lot of them when you get to the top of portal road.
