Mt. Whitney Portal Store & Hostel Forums General Mt. Whitney Portal Store Message Board Mt. Whitney summit attempt March 11th

My friend and I will attempt a day hike up the main Mt. Whitney trial next Sunday March 11. We will be arriving next Fri (March 9) and will probably recon the first 4+- miles of the trail to see how conditions/snow depth are before our summit bid on the 11th.

I will give an up date after next weekend and hopefully it will be good news about making it to the top.

I am looking forward to your report. I will be in the L.A. area in mid-April and am considering a summit attempt. My son and I summited in Aug.2002, but this will be a solo trip. I am couching this as an attempt, because I know there are a lot of things that can go wrong, especially early in the season. If anyone else has an information about trail/snow conditions this year, I would like to hear from you. With respect to snow equipment, I have the option of snowshoes (Northern Lights), crampons and an ice ax, or all of the above.

No new word on the subject. I plan to head on out with all my hardware and see what the Rangers think when I get there. The time I have available for this trip should exceed the time required for the main trail so I hope to be able to take some side trips and look at the area in a way I have never been able to before.
