What is the situation at Whitney (and other trailheads) for food storage outside the vehicle? Are there ample boxes? Do you need a lock?

Usually these are always full and you end up shoving your bags of food in with everyone else. Its easy for items to get crushed.

Please don't lock the public bear boxes

Unless you are staying at a campsite in the campground, you will need to share a locker with other people.
