Heading up to bishop pass area with some buddies for the holiday weekend. 2 years ago we got clobberd by mosquitos in the long lakes (rock creek) area and had to abort the trip. I am looking to hike either Mt. Goode or Mt. Agassiz and want to get a read on mosquitos/snow/general conditions. Not sure if this is the best place for that info.

I expect mosquitos, but 2 years ago, you could not take a breath without swallowing a dozen - couldn't get out of the tent etc. Just hoping not to have the same experience.

Also trying to find out if there is a place to rent bear cannisters in the south lake area. I know I can get them at wilsons, or perhaps in lone pine on the way up.

Thanks for the advice!

We remember those mosquitoes very very well two years ago. It was AWFUL. We had to bail on our trip because they were so bad we could not even stop to eat. They just zoomed in to our boiling water. We had never seen anything like it. We had mosquitoes everywhere and bites in places we didn't know we had. I know there will always be some, but that year was UNBELIEVABLE.

I called Lone Pine sporting goods and they rent bear cannisters for $2.5 a day, but only open till 7 on Thrusday night.

Is there another store open later - right before you make a left up to the portal? I recall driving through on a friday night about 9:30 on my way to the portal and they were open.

Could not google a name

South lake/Bishop creek resort do not have cannisters.

Report from there is that there are mosquitos but not a big enough swarm to carry me away...
