I especially like www.smugmug.com . For $40 per year, you get unlimited storage, no ads, and a 6Gb per month viewing per month before they raise the fee. (I have a number of galleries, and viewing never approaches 1% of the 6Gb).

And if others signing up give your email address, you get a discount on annual renewal rates. (My email is: stevec@sfsu.edu smile ...and you get a discount, too! )

You can see my main gallery page here: http://stevec.smugmug.com/

I actually like flickr.com. It's extremely easy to setup, the uploader is a piece of cake, and I think it's a little less expensive than Smugmug. Check that: it's $25/yr for 2GB/mo, which, like Steve C, I've never come close to the limit at all. And I shoot everything! I also like the links that flickr. com has to other sites to "make stuff". I'll probably order my Christmas pictures from there, and there even is a way to get your photos as postage stamps!

Just my 2 cents,
Laura

Steve, I wonder if I was "grandfathered" in at 12GB per month? I also don't come clost to my bandwidth limit. A few months have been up in the 3GB range. I don't think I'll ever be able to leave them, since my uploads are approaching 25GB now!

If you push the envelope, smugmug limits images to 64 megapixels and 8 megabytes (or 16 megabytes on a pro account). What are flickr's limits?

Richard, you may indeed be grandfathered. My account shows I get 6 Gb, just like new sign-ups.

Here's the information straight from the flickr.com site:

Are there limits on file sizes or file types for uploads?

If you have a free account, each photo you upload must be less than 5MB in size. If you have a pro account, each file must be less than 10MB.

Flickr officially supports JPEGs, non-animated GIFs and PNGs. You may also upload TIFFs and some other file types, but they will automatically be converted to and stored in JPEG format.

As you publish photos they are compressed and re-sized by Flickr (if necessary) in the following sizes:

75x75 pixels
100 pixels (on the longest side)
240 pixels
500 pixels
Large (which will be 1024 pixels if it exceeds that length)
And the original size (if you hold a pro account)
You can access all of these sizes for a photo via a link under the photo title labelled 'All Sizes' on its individual page. There's also a link labelled "See different sizes" under the Additional Information heading.

We also store your high-resolution originals for you if you have a Pro Account, which you (and your friends with Pro Accounts) can download again at anytime. All Pro Account holders can access public photos and download the high-resolution (original) size, unless you specify who has access to the downloadable image.

Now, I am not using anything close to a professional level camera, nor am I putting together panoramic shots or 360's. My hiking/packing camera is a tiny Sony DSC-S600, 6MP, point+shoot. But what the hell, it's light and it takes great shots. My pics can be seen at www.flickr.com/photos/moosepics621. If I ever get around to saving money for a new computer/camera, then I'll probably look at a different site.

I signed up with Smugmug 9/28/05.
Original monthly viewing limit was 4MB.
Sometime during my first year, it was bumped up to 6MB.

Could a smugmug user familiar with Flickr explain why they think it's superior?

Steve, I like the smugmug presentation of galleries better -- you have a number of choices how you view them (a pull-down set of choices at the top of the window). If you are really trying to decide, best view the sites listed above and see for yourself.

For Laura's site, you have to remove the trailing period from the URL.

Oops! Sorry guys. I guess correct syntax doesn't always count for everything!

Steve C: Thanks for the info. I did compare both UIs, and you're right, smugmug is way better.
