Mt. Whitney Portal Store & Hostel Forums General Mt. Whitney Portal Store Message Board Ice on Lone Pine Lake or Lower Boy Scout

I am heading up tonight to hang with some buddies at the summer homes and am planning a hike up to one of the two above destinations.

Planning on bringing my fly rod.... are these lakes still covered with ice or have they melted?

No ice on LBSL. Saw a couple of trout in there this past weekend.

Lone Pine Lake is completely thawed. Saw some pan-sized trout darting around on Tuesday. There's also a hot spot on the creek at the Alabama Hills before you head up to the Portal (Just park with all the other anglers). Good luck.

LBSL is one of my favorite holes up there, great little hike.... some nice fish too.

Might do some climbing in the alabamas, i will make sure the gear is packed for a sunset shot at dinner....

I'll be doing a warm-up hike to Lone Pine Lake the day before our day hike to Whitney in mid-July -- what weight fly-rod would you take up there? I'm guessing about a 3- or 4-wt. Any favorite flies prove successful?
