Looking to drop a car at Whitney Portal and find a ride (for 2) to Lodgepole on Saturday, July 2nd (yup, HST!) Boards have been great for shuttle info, but I thought I'd try this and try to save some of that beer & burger money. Anyone heading west that day?

I wish you luck. You are asking for a rather convoluted, approximately 300 mile ride from one remote location to another.

I know because I hitched that very route many years ago having left my car at the western end of the High Sierra Trail and hiked to Whitney quite naively expecting to hike back. So I had to get back to the car. It took two full days and some interesting rides and adventures including ignoring the "don't hitchhike on freeway" signs and sleeping in some ballfield in Fresno with lots of ants.

Then again, getting connected by commercial services is probably not easy either.

In any event, good luck getting a ride for two.

Where is Lodgepole? We will be arriving in Lone Pine on July 2nd and heading up to Lee Vining/Tioga Pass by the 3rd. Don't know if we can be of help or not.

Fred - thanx for your words of wisdom. RTSigrist - looks like your travels take you up the east side of the Range, we're looking to get a ride to the west side (Lodgepole is near Visalia). I'll keep this forum open for a few days in case others have any ideas - thanks again for the speedy responses. Aloha!

I did the Lodgepole last year. The trick is to
have a freind or take transportation to Fresno.
Once on the Hwy up to the mountains in Fresno, any
one can take you up. Once you cross the Sierras.
Almost anyone can take you back to Los Angeles from Whitney. I had no travel getting a ride to Orang county from Lone Pine. That route is very peacefull. I only saw five people during my 5 days
solo crossing. Be very carfull when you reach the Kern Hot Springs. Loads of snakes. I saw two and olmost step on one. It saw me before I saw it. Good luck....
