Just curious if anyone has been up to Mt Baldy in the last week or so. By either the ski hut trail or via the Devils Backbone. Any info and/or pix would be great.

Thanks in advance.

A friend was up Saturday. He said there was enough snow on the top to cover the windblocks entirely.

It's hard in the morning with surface slush coming as it warms up. This is when it gets a bit dicey.

They went up the Ski Hut trail and down the bowl from Baldy/Harwood Divide.

Crampons and ice axe are required and it's best to get a real early start.

Post your question on this site too, you may get additional info.

Go to the Southern California Mountains Topics forum on the site.

Also the Mt. Baldy Visitor Center in Baldy Village can provide fairly up to date info as well. Their number is 909-982-2894.

I was up there the last two Fridays. This last Friday it had snowed about 5 inches the two days before. I tried to ski the south side of the bowl, and set off that 10 foot wide sluff that starts just below the top and ends near the bottom. The snow should be firm by now, except for the storms of yesterday and today and maybe this weekend. The right side of the bowl seems to firm up faster, if that helps.

I climbed Baldy before the most recent storms came through. There is lots of snow from the ski hut to the summit. Crampons, ice axe, helmet, and the skill touse them correctly are required for a safe trip to the summit. The Baldy ski resort expects skiing into June.

As has been noted on other boards, RJ Secor, noted climber and author, sustained serious injuries in the Baldy ski bowl. He had to be airlifted out and spent an extensive amount of time in the hospital. He is one of several people airlifted out of the bowl behind the ski hut this year.

When I went up a couple of weeks ago most people on the trail competent, but I did see some mistakes including one climber losing control of his glisade and tumbling for a while. I had to self-arrest once when I stumbled when my crampons caught something in the snow.
