A report on the SGWA board stated that two seperate (almost three) climbers were air lifted out yesterday. From the reports, it sounds like they slipped on the descent.

Yes there was an Airlift from the Sierra Ski Hut on Saturday. A famous Mountaineer/Writer was injured when he lost control Glissading the Baldy Bowl. He hit some rocks and then tumbled to the bottom of the bowl. He was consious at the hut but the head injuries looked very sever to me (a lay person) He was not wearing a helmet or carrying an Ice Ax. San Bernadino Fire and Rescue- Not sure what trama center they took him too. Unable to find out his condition yet.

The Bowl was very fast. I glissaded in self Arrest Position through the chutes at the top and down some of the top of the bowl. Stopped to assist a hiker that was way over his head kicking steps backawrds down the bowl. He was not prepared. He had only a Wet Sweater for warmth and and was in Tennis Shoes- Yes tennis shoes. I gave him some gloves. His hiking group was at the hut- they were wet cold and scared. I left them a down jacket and head lamp to get down in the dark. Hiker Glen was going to wait until he got down and in fact he went back up the bowl and kicked steps for the guy to get down. Glen hiked the group to the trail head. He may have been the third evac that you were talking about if it was not for the team work on the mountain that day...Glen you ROCK!

What I learned: You can not be too prepared- EVER. Wear a helmet, carry an Ice Ax and know how to use it - Practice. People make bad choice on the mountain all the time. Be willing to assist and help when ever you can. Accidents happen even to "the best of them" and that is why they call them accidents!

Hike and climb safe... CT

I climbed the ski bowl the day after the people were airlifted out. Conditions were great for climbing, firm snow, mild temps and clear skies. After summiting via the bowl, I got *****ed out by the soft snow conditions on the back bone trail where the trail runs down the ridge and my inner voice told me to stop and go back whence I came. I hiked back up to the notch between Harwood and Baldy and went down the bowl. I was about to glissade down when my inner voice said be safe and walk down. Even walking down I took a small tumble when the soft snow collapsed under me, but I went into a quick self arrest. Sometimes it pays to listen to those inner voices.

Correct it was RJ that was air lifted out of the Sierra Ski Hut on Baldy on the 16th. and the last I heard his prognosis was good. Wonderful news! This was two days ago. I am hoping it is still good and getting better.

From the CMC mailing list:
--------------------

I’m writing this because I don’t see a follow-up to either Sigrid’s or Henry’s e-mails. I called his mom on Monday morning and visited R.J. on Monday night, and then I called her back afterward.

A well-meaning e-mail went out about holding off from calling his folks. After talking with his mom, I must contradict that instruction. If his mother knows you, then please call her. She is having a difficult time and needs our support. It cheered her up so much that I was going to visit R.J. Even though R.J. is sedated, when he is awake, he is aware of your presence. He touched my hand. I believe that human contact is important for his recovery.

His mother was told by the treating physician that he is expected to make a good recovery.

R.J.’s mother asked R.J. if he was taking his ice axe and crampons that day and he was. It is likely that his axe was lost in the fall and that his crampons were ripped from beneath his pack where he keeps them, because they were not with his things or in his car. (His mother was going to double check the condition of that area for rips, etc.) Witnesses on the mountain saw R.J. slip on ice that was covered with a thin layer of snow. He was unable to arrest. From the descriptions, it appears that he may have been above the bowl, hiking down from the summit at the time of the slip. He landed fairly close to the Hut. He has skull fracture(s?), broken shoulder blade(?), probably broken ribs and they suspect a crushed windpipe.

The hospital is trying to wean him from the sedative and the ventilator. He will be transferred to Kaiser on Sunset (probably) when he is stable enough to move. There is no estimate on that yet.

If you do go to visit, please find out the visiting hours for the ICU; they are not the same as the rest of the hospital.

Colton, CA
Just past the 15, right off of the 10. Left on Pepper.

I had no trouble parking at 6:00 pm on Monday; Maria Roa had much trouble in the mid-morning on Tuesday.

If you do plan to go visit R.J., be prepared to be shocked by his appearance.

Tracy
---------------

An eyewitness also has posted:

He had his ice axe and his yellow overalls on. He was seated and began to glissade. He lost control very quickly and failed to self-arrest ( he tried very hard to). Then he hit the rocks and tumbled down all the way. He started down from the same spot as I did just behind me. It was a terrible accident to watch.

A little off the subject, but:
20 years ago I knew an extroverted adventurer named Ron Secor, wife Maria, out of San Dimas, with a business in Irwindale (FAST Auto Dismantling).
Is RJ related? Possibly a Ron Jr?

Thanks for the update Ken

I have never met Mr. Secor, but have used his book often to motivate me about new adventures in the Sierra.

All though I do not know him, I own this man alot for the great memories he has inspired. As well as the personal growth from my back-country travels.

All the best to him and his family!
