Hey, Doug, what's the status on your hotel? Is it going to open for business this summer (or is it already)?
Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but I haven't seen it discussed here oddly enough.
Thanks!

Hi Doug Jr. myself and a good friend work on the place everyday ,We have about two weeks left before we head up the mountain and open the portal store. We will have the structure done and about all that is left to do is the drywall and finish(interior) since we do most of the work , it looks like we will open early spring next season. Plan to set the rooms up somewhat like the Phatom Ranch in the Grand Canyon. A place to store extra Stuff leave the cars in town and shuttle to the trailheads. It will be setup for groups doing workshops etc and each room will have internet connection Each room has a shower/tub and we have 5 public showers that will be open 24 hours.
We have 4 photo workshops that have asked to use the place and art classes will be held , we plan to focus on the Mountaineering and backcountry in the area ,also do some program every evening during the summer, have guest speakers on the things that bring people to the area. Thanks Doug

The place sounds like the greatest thing since sliced bread. Good luck in bringing it to completion. Please keep us posted!

Doug, Sounds great and very much needed here. In case we don't say it enough, Thanks for all that you do for us. BTW, How many rooms in the hotel, and any thought on the expected cost/room, as compared with the Dow across the street?

Awesome! It all sounds really good, but I bet just the car drop off, shuttle service, and 5 showers would be a good business all by themselves. I know I would have really liked to have had a commercial option to keep my car safe, bring me to Cottowood Lakes trailhead, and pick me up from the Whitney Portal on one of my trips. Any chance the showers and shuttle could be a go for this summer?

That would have saved me 10miles of walking up the road after I finished the JMT in Yosemite and bussed it back to Lone Pine in 2004. Oh well. Sounds like a great service at both ends, that will also help to keep the traffic down on the portal road. Eric

Ohmygawd. We had to wait till we got back to Vegas to take a shower after our three day ordeal last year. I would have paid $50 for a hot shower in Lone Pine. Ro****s will thanks you for years to come....

I have used the pond at Whitney Portal in the past. But last year there were too many kids fishing, so we used the stream. Cold, but refreshing!
I always pack a towel and a clean change of clothes in the car for the end of a hike.
Sure makes the long drive home more pleasant.
