Thinking about shooting some film this weekend. Can someone tell me, is the road to the Portal pk lot open. Or would I have to start from Lonepine camp ground. Also bear can, or bear bag ?

The road is closed. You can see the <a href="http://www.mt-whitney.info/viewtopic.php?p=1734#1734"> current road conditions </a> here.

You can go up the road as far as the first switchback above the road closure sign. If the road is closed why is there a "Loose Gravel" sign right next to the "Road Closed" sign?

If you are going basecamp in the Portal use the bathroom in the pinic area as your "bear box". We cut some step down to it.

We didn't see any traffic up the main trail beyond the North Fork last weekend. My guess is if you are cutting trail it is going take a while.

Friends Misha and Steve were headed for Consultation Lake on 3/23 using snowshoes so they should have broken the trail up to that point. Of course, it could easily get filled in again with some new snow.

Within the last few months, many groups have started near the bottom of the hill. Some have started before the road closed sign and some have started above, depending on where they parked their car and how much snow was on the road.

Most seem to suggest taking about 3-5 hours to the portal and another 3 hours to Lone Pine Lake. Going is slow in the snow, especially if you are breaking trail.
