Had to cram in a lot in one day in Yosemite. Luckily my weekends are mid-week, that many less headaches and people.

I posted this on a couple other Yosemite-related web sites, but since the west side creeps in here sometimes, why not.

The trail to the top of Yosemite Falls (my hike March 11) is wide open, snow only the last half mile or so, and if the weather stays put for a while that'll disappear soon. Snow level about 6500. The waterfalls are raging. If you don't feel safe on the East side of the Sierra, Yosemite is your best bet, but remember to avoid the Easter crowds before and after March 27.

I hope to have photos up on my web site tonight sometime. Keep an eye on it.

Hike of Your Life:
I am interested in seeing your site when it is finished. That is one big eye!
Do you think the trail to Half Dome and the cables will be up by May 23 or so? My wife and I are taking her dad out there all the way from Georgia and hope to do the hike to the top and climb the cables. She is concerned that all the extra snow may keep us from making the hike.
thanks

Hi. In my experience the cables are usually put up the last weekend of May. I suspect with all the rainfall we've had in CA this year, the odds are that the cables will be down longer, instead of being up earlier. The park rangers will be able to tell you as you enter the gate. According to the NPS website, "The Half Dome cables are down for the season. We usually put them back up prior to Memorial Day weekend, conditions permitting." You can check back here for updates: http://www.nps.gov/yose/now/conditions.htm#trails

Cables will be up around May 20 or 21. A guy who wound up hiking with me to Yose Falls said the day before he hiked up JMT past Nevada Fall, and Mist Trail was closed. He managed to get through the ice cut but stopped about a mile short of Little Yose before the snow was too deep for him. By the time he returned, the Mist Trail was open. This was on March 10...with this last storm, things might be iffy for a few days but not for long, it's going to be sunny for a while, I guess.

Anyway, I spent today not driving or hiking and have a shell of a web site up there. Take a look.

I'll hopefully have Mt. Whitney stuff up there as well as a dive bomb from San Diego to Reno and back I did last Jan. 10 on the same site.

Have fun!
