The regular trail covers about 11 miles from the Portal to the summit but a good part of this mileage is made up of switchbacks. Thus some of the steepness is taken out of the mountain at the cost of added mileage. This is a moot point however, when traveling over snow, because one isn't confined to the trail but can take a relatively straight line approach as is commonly done above Trail Camp, bypassing the 97 switchbacks.

I am wondering if anyone has an accurate measure of what the mileage from Portal to summit might be in this "straight line" scenario. If not an accurate measure how about a good estimate or a flat a-- guess.

I pose the question because I am considering a day trip at the end of April, conditions permitting, and am trying to decide between the MR and the main trail. Any input is appreciated.
