August 28, 2004: Mountaineer's Route - Mt Whitney - Keeler Needle - Crooks Peak - Mt Muir and back on the Main Whitney Trail
<a href="http://community.webshots.com/album/181412214PssnLa"> Four peaks in a day </a>
My second time up the Mountaineer's Route, Calhiker and Steve's first. My cough was almost gone so I felt good. We bagged Mt Whitney (14,497'), Keeler Needle (14,240'), Crooks Peak (14,080'), Mt Muir (14,015'), and came down the main Whitney trail. Epic Day!!!

These have to be some of the best pictures I've seen yet of the 3rd class chute above the notch, lots of detail and different points of view. Thanks! Looking forward to the MR in October.

Snowy, I think I met a friend of yours up at Iceberg Lake on Monday, August 30. I think she said her name was "Sheila". She knew you and Bob R, of course. We were coming back from our climb of Fishhook Arête. Best regards to you and Snow Dude. BTW, in "Mountain Poker" I would call what you did "two pair". Two recoginized 14'ers (Whitney and Muir) and two unrecognized 14'ers (Keeler and Day/Crooks). Good show! :-D

Great shots, Snowy. You definitely have a knack for photographic composition.
I know that this question has been batted around for a bit, but did you and your group have or need a permit to head back down the main trail?
Thanks, L

Snowy - With the side trips to Keller and Crooks, what was your time down from Whitney to the Portal.

Snowy, one more thing... Why is Williamson *your* mountain? (LOL);-D Williamson is *my* favorite peak. It became my favorite years ago when I was driving south down 395 from Big Pine one evening. It was during the summer (early July?) and the sun was just setting. The sierra crest shadowed the Owens valley but the North wall of Williamson was lit up brilliant red like it was on fire! I wish I could have got a picture of it. It was magnificent. It was the right time of year, with the sun setting far north of west, and the right time of day for Williamson to show how it stands above the sierra crest to the west. Every thing was in shadow except for Williamson. Very cool. Oh yeah, great glissades down the headwall if you climb it from Bairs creek in late April!

Lawaneke, yes, I had a permit (Lottery) that I applied for early this year. Three weeks ago we didn't have one, and we weren't sure so we came back the same way (MR).
Walter, After the 9 day trip, very time we drove by on the 395 in daylight, I had to pull over and take pictures of Williamson, Trojan, Barnard, etc. Calhiker was was following me and asked why I pulled over. I jokingly called said I had to stop and look at "my" mountain. I really liked Williamson.
Keeler and Crooks were fast. But we spent more time on each peak than we should have taking pictures and enjoying the views. (just under 2 hrs from Whitney to Muir?) By the time we got to Muir, my legs were tired. It took 10 min to get to the base of the Cl 3. Didn't seem like we were up there long, but it was 1.5 hrs r/t for Muir. Time flies . . . we stopped to filter water at Trail camp, and it didn't seem long, but it was 45 min! It took 2 hr 45 min from Trail Camp to WP in the dark.

Snow Nymph,
Thanks for the excellent photos from your climb. I especially liked the summit ascent shots on Muir from the switchbacks. That really shows the exposure!
