Mt. Whitney Portal Store & Hostel Forums General Mt. Whitney Portal Store Message Board Campsite availability

I'm driving up Friday, 8/27, arriving at Whitney Portal after 10pm. Just wondering if I can expect available sites at the walk-in campground, or at the drive-in campgrounds. My alternate plan was to go to the Cottonwood Lakes trailhead to spend a night there. Less convenient (I'm doing the MR tomorrow morning), but it would at least give me a night of acclimating at 10K'.

I would expect the Drive-in camp to be full, but the walk-in camp to have plenty spaces if you get there in the early evening.

Thanks for the info yj bill. Unfortunately we'll be coming up a bit later, after 10pm. What are the chances we'll find a site? (We'll be sure to be quiet!)

Last year we were up on a full moon weekend and ended up staying at horseshoe meadows, the portal was pretty crowded and the bear boxes were all full.

Full moon- forgot about that.
Thanks for the info. We might just go right to Horseshoe meadow or Cottonwood Lakes.
