I see on my Cottonwood to Whitney permit that bear cannisters are recommended, not required. It would sure be a nice couple of pounds to shed. I don't think there is bear activity at Chickenspring Lake or Rock Creek. Although I've never run into a bear at Crabtree, I've had my cannister but there are also some bear boxes. The tarns above Guitar should be OK. The big problem is the front side but we will either hike all the way out or eat our last meal prior to the night. Any comments.

It's been explained to me like this, and knowing the Inyo this is one of probably 3 or 4 explanations.

Although you are not required to have a BRC in the Cottonwood drainage you need one on The Main Trail, therefore, it is a requirement when you leave Horseshoe Meadow.

However, you can get a special dispensation from the Lords of the Inyo if you promise not to camp east to Trail Crest and go directly to Whitney Portal.

Its $2 per day at WPStore or $5 per trip at Lone Pine Ranger Station.
