To do the MR route, you do not need one. However if you plan to go up the MR route and down the main trail, you do. That might be where the confusion comes in.

Unless regs have changed since last year on this issue you may go up the MR and down the main trail without a permit for day trips.

So....
just to confirm with the regulars and experts, you do not need any type of permit for a day trip up the North Fork.
I am planning on hiking up Thor Peak on Saturday.
Thanks.

Thanks Kid.
Don't care for the hassle of the Ranger Station.
Down in my neck of the woods, you need a Wilderness Adventure Pass for ANY activity in the National Forests. More or less an entrance fee.

Still no need for any permit to come back down the main trail either. I am planning a day hike loop of Russell, Whitney, Kelle and Muir Sept 26 and was told by Lone Pine NFS office in person and over the phone that I do not need a permit to come out on the main trail.
