I am planning a trip on august 1, 2004. Can anyone point me to a resource to find out what the moon will be like on that day...full...nonexistent...something in between? I am planning an early AM start and am curious how much light I might expect.

Try this site. It gives sunrise/sunset and moonrise/moonset times. Lone Pine, CA is available through the link.

http://www.sunrisesunset.com/custom_srss_calendar.asp

While it won't specify the moon phase on a per day basis, you can see full and new moon days listed. You are in luck - Full moon is on July 31st. You will have plenty of moonlight on August 31st.

On August 1, 2004, the moon is one day past full. It rises at 9:11 PM and sets at 8:04 AM the next morning. A nice program for sun and moon rise/set times is available at:

http://www.iserv.net/~bsidell/moonrise.htm

You will have a full moon in the sky all night. If the moon is high enough in the sky, you won't need a headlamp except for parts of the trail that are under tree cover. Sometimes, however, the moon is behind the south ridge line and you don't get much light. The exact height of the moon varies over time.

Try this link:

http://www.fourmilab.ch/cgi-bin/uncgi/Earth/action?opt=-m&img=Moon.evif

It will give you the phase of the moon for any date.

August 1 is very close to the full moon, so you will be well lit during you hike.
