Hey guys,sometimetime back I remember reading a post concerning an individual who was recommended as an instructor in the Mammoth area for winter mountaineering instruction. I've searched the forum by key word, but had no results. Does anyone have this information? Thanks in advance for your help.

There is a guy in June Lake (just north of Mammoth) named Doug Nidever, who I've met guiding clients on Whitney, who seemed very good. Doug was formerly chief guide at Yosemite Mountaineering School. His web site is http://www.themountainguide.com/

Rainier Mountaineering hold classes in winter mountaineering on Mt. Rainier throughout the year.

Try Sierra Mountain Center in Bishop. I took a Snow Skills course was impressed by their thoroughness and individual attention.

Also out of Bishop is <a href="http://www.sierramountaineering.com"> Sierra Mountaineering </a>. I have a taken an Avalanche Level I class with them and have climbed with one of their guides. Both excellent experiences. Kurt Wedberg and his staff are top notch.

Myself and three friends recently completed a 5 day seminar, taught by Kurt Wedberg and Sierra Mountaineering International out of Bishop. We learned ice ax skills, cramponing, snow and glacier travel, rope handling, rappelling, fixed line, technical ice climbing, and expedition camping. The course was capped of with an ascent of Mt Whitney via the Mountaineers Route. Excellent course, very informative, fun, and taught by great guides! I would highly recommend SMI.

I've also taken Kurt Wedberg's Avalanche Clinic. Safe, comprehensive. He is also an Everest summiteer, and was a senior guide on Rainier, which he has summitted something like 135 times.

However, I'll also say that I"ve not heard of anyone guiding on the eastern side, that did not know what they were doing. I think it is a pretty elite group.
