We're coming up w/ a group of 14 this weekend; dads and sons.

Any suggestions on a good place for us all to gather for dinner in Lone Pine Fri night before we take off Sat am?

Also a bkfst place?

I can't remember the name of any of the places, but there are only a few anyway. The little diner restaurant beside the Lone Pine Hotel is good. There is also a great local bar and grill restaurant across the street.

There are two burger places in Lone Pine Jack in the box (which also has a gas station) and McDonalds.
Across from the Dow Villa hotel is the Pizza Factory. I have eaten there many times.

A trip up 395 is not complete without a stop at the High Sierra Cafe for breakfast. There is The Pizza Factory across the street ("We toss 'em, their awesome!") and another spot just up from the Pizza Factory that I can't recall the name of, but there is an outdoor patio. Mt. Whitney Cafe is terrible - so be forewarned.

But the very best place for a great burger is the Whitney Portal Store.

I'd go to The Pizza Factory. A group of 14 might over tax the High Sierra Cafe, which would be my 2nd choice in town.

Breakfast is a no brainer...The Whitney Portal Store. Have a pancake. Bet'cha can't eat one.

Beware of the High Sierra restaurant (formerly PJ's) open 24 hrs. just across the parking lot of Dow's.

Problem being you get flies with your meal. No typo, I mean "flies" not fries. Seems they swarm in the back door when deliveries come. There's apparently no fan over the door. I spent the whole time I was eating swatting them away. They were crawling all over the lips of the coffee cups. No telling where they stuck their dirty feet before they came in. If bugs don't bother you, OK, but I'd check the scrambled eggs first to see if there's any extra ingredients.

Best to bring something from home to eat pre-hike.

Here's another vote for The Pizza Factory. Last time I was in Lone Pine I had pizza for dinner and leftover pizza for breakfast.

I've eaten in the High Sierra Cafe many times, and never seen a fly problem. I'd suggest that you many have encountered an unusual condition.
If you say that you've eaten there many times, then I'd say you're certifiable. smile

I'm with Ken. I've eaten at High Sierra Cafe a lot and the only problem I've ever had was slow service when the place is packed.

I have just returned form Lone Pine and at 11:00 PM the High Sierra Cafe is the greatest thing on earth. It is also the only 24 hour restaurant in Lone Pine. I have also eaten at the Mt. Whitney Restaurant, my hiking buddies like it over the rest, for a diner. The Pizza Factory is just that good food, maybe a room for your group (I’m not sure). For a nice dinner I have eaten at the Totem Café, they have taken good care of me, by myself or in a group. These are the ones I have tried and liked.

There are other places to eat at, some I want to try some day.

There is all ways fast food but you have that at home, I’m sure.

Best pricey dinner hands down is the Merry Go Round. Recommend the succulent perfectly grilled pork tenderloin. Breakfast- anywhere, hard to screw up eggs n sausage.

I agree that the Merry Go Round is the finest available meal in town. Great steaks; fresh bread; decent wine list too.

I know your question was about Lone Pine, but I never go up to the portal without getting a burger at the Portal Store. Best burger around in my opinion, and reasonably priced.
