This is my first trip up the Mt. Whitney trail and I have read that Mt. Muir is simply a scramble up from the main trail. Is it worth it to try this? How long will it actually take away from the Whitney summit? How is the ease of the hike?

It's worth it if your are already around. But as JohnJ mentioned, there is a short part very exposed. If you are going a classic trail, you may feel a bit uncomfortable on this part. However, if you are going from Iceberg Lake, you should have no problem.
