I am flying into LA and may not make it to the Ranger Station to pick up a Bear Canister for the trip up Whitney. Does anyone know of a place that I can stop at on the way from LA where I can rent a canister?

Actually, you can ask them to leave your permit outside the station for late arrivals. At least you could in the past

We can arrange for an afterhours pick-up of everything except the canister.

Since Lone Pine is out for the canister stop at Adventure 16 at Pico and Sepulveda, just off I-405 in W.LA. They'll rent them but they will cost you a bit more.

Call them for directions, I think they are in the 310 area code.

I visited the Whitney Portal Store on Friday May 21, 2004. The Portal store is right at the trailhead bottom of Whitney trail.

Store Hours: May 9-6, June 8-8, July 7-9, August 7-9, September 8-8, October 9-6

When I visited, I saw they had a stack of bear containers that almost reached the ceiling. Plus, they had boxed ones in another area.

you can also rent a bearikade (about half the weight of the standard plastic bear cans) online at https://id262.securedata.net/wild-ideas/rent.html

your back will thank you.

Hi, folks.

Does the Portal or any other local place have the bearikade available for rental?

I like the lightweight aspect of the bearikade, but because of the timing of my trip, if I rented one over the Net, shipped by mail, I'd have to pony up about two weeks' rental for a one-nighter.

BrotherJim: Call the folks at Bearikade and explain your situation. I've found them to be pretty nice folks and they may be able to help you out (maybe ship it to somewhere in Lone Pine??). I have a bearikade that I would loan you for the climb, but I'm in the SF area and have the same logistics problem.

Thanks, Sam.

I contacted the Bearikade folks and they did offer me something that will work for me - a little better rate on a longer rental. They were particularly willing because I'm not traveling until after Labor Day, at which time they will have plenty of inventory available.

Jim
