Curious if anyone here knows if the cables are up yet at Halfdome. Or if anyone knows when they will be put up?

Thanks in advance.

The cables usually go up the weekend before Memorial day.

Be aware of the trail maintenance scheduled on the shoulder and sub-dome of the Half Dome trail this summer. Here is the info borrowed from the NPS conditions web site for Yosemite:

<a href="http://www.nps.gov/yose/now/conditions.htm">Current Yosemite Conditions</a>

>>>During the summer of 2005 trail work will be continuing on the subdome and shoulder portions of the Half Dome Trail. This work will occur from July 6 through October 4 (7:00 am-4:00 pm, Mondays-Thursdays). During this time hikers will be prohibited through this section of trail and there is no trail access to the top of Half Dome. The trail will remain open from Thursday at 4:00 pm through Monday at 7:00 am as well as after 4:00 pm until 7:00 am Monday through Wednesday.<<

Does the trail closure include the trail that you can take if you follow the road to the Happy Isles vistor center and continue up to the water tank. There is a trail at that point that eventual connects the the Mist trail above the river crossing? This is the trail that I take when I run in the valley. I assume that people know about that approach.

Paul,
The trail closure is located above Little Yosemite Valley- past the trail junction with Clouds Rest- on the steep area 1/4 mile just before the famous main cables. Other than doing some face route up the dome, there will be no easy way to bypass this closure for the limited Monday-Thursday time they are doing the well needed work on this part of the trail. Plan to do the dome on weekends only this early part of the 2005 season.
