I am planning a second attempt to climb Mt Russell on June 26, snow permitting, via either the Rockwell variation or the standby east ridge route. Any joiners ?

Last summer I day hiked Mt Whitney and enjoyed the views so much that I hiked Mt Langley on the following day. After that, I couldn't wait to go back to Lone Pine. On the last snow-free weekend of the season, I up with a fellow novice to just take a look at Mt Russell. OK, I was hoping to summit. We got up to the ridge and it was late and windy and we got spooked by the exposure and turned back. It's haunted me all winter. I would love to go up again this summer with a larger group, hopefully some experienced Russell (summit) climbers.

Maybe we can get a group together, have a party at the top.

Just wanted to add - email or followup posts are both welcome. Same goes for a Mt San Jacinto training hike in May. And, thanks to everyone who writes in - I've enjoyed reading the trip reports, advice, warnings and also the humor !!

LOL,

Hi Marion,

I'd like to climb Mt. Russell, I've a concern though. What kind of exposure if any does climbing any of the two routes to summit Mt. Russell represent? what climbing class are these consider? Although I'm in great physical shape I've summited Mt. Whitney twice before, Mt Langley and Mt Shasta and I do trail running in San Gabriel and San Bernandino mountains I've never done any route above class 3. I'd like to climb class 4 and 5 but I need to find people with experience to do so. Let me know, thank you.

Russell is a class 111 at the least, with class v exposure, dont look down.

I'm a so cal hiker as well, My brother and I are planning an overnight trip to Mt. Russell and possibly Whitney June 13-15. I want to get one last local peak for some conditioning as a dayhike over the Memorial weekend, anyone got any plans for San J or San G and looking for some company?

Rick

Make sure you post a trip report on your return. I am taking a group of six up on a three day trip to do Whitney, Muir and Russell. Would love to know the conditions just before leaving.

Rick,

I will be going for a hike to San Jacinto Mts. this Saturday 5/8. I plan to summit San Jacinto peak. I want to do a early start around 6 to 7 am but I'm flexible about the time. Let me know if you're interested on this hike. I think it's about 5-7 miles.

Cgaliano,
San J. next Saturday sounds really great. However it's my wife's birthday and I made plans for the weekend. (too bad bagging a peak isnt one of her birthday wishes.) My only windows of oppurtunity before our Russell Trip will be Sat. May 16 (planning on Baldy from the Village) and one local peak day hike during Memorial Weekend.
