Some years ago, I had no trouble (two separate times over a couple of seasons) I had no trouble getting a [single] permit by showing up at the USFS headquarters there in Lone Pine, and just awaiting last minute cancellations. Had to be there early ahead of other folks ... but there were always a handful or so permits to get.

Anyone have similar [encouraging] experience lately (2003)?

It's a bit of a crap-shoot for me, 'cause I'll drive all the way from the Bay area ... and just chance it, but so far, okay.

They still do that?

Thanks,

Before the era of the lottery when you used your speed dial the Inyo would give out out walk-in permits based on what they thought would be cancelled for that particular. Now, it's actual cancellations, both according to a rangers I have spoken to in the past.

Day hike permits aren't usually a problem mid week. Backpacking permits, it's roll the dice and take your chances. Make sure you have other plans if your Whitney dreams don't pan out.

On July 2 last summer (a Wed., I think), a member of our party either got, or could have got, an unclaimed day-hike permit for the next day. I was surprised that a walk-in permit was available.

It was pretty late in the day (we had started the day at Cottonwood Lakes and had walked out and driven to Lone Pine).
