Can I get your suggestions as to other interesting sights, i.e., museums, scenic places, historical sights, points of interest, that I can check out while i'm in the area?

The Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery is a nice place to kill a couple of hours, if you are into that sort of thing.
It is a couple miles north of Independance off the 395.
More info is here:

There are many, many interesting things to see between Ridgecrest and Bishop - museums, scenic spots, historical points. Depends on how much time you have and how far you want to range from Lone Pine itself. My first pick/suggestion for someone with time is to make the drive up to Schulman Grove in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. Try the Methuselah Trail there. This is better than an hour drive from Lone Pine. Other ideas that are unique to the area are the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery north of Indepenence as mentioned by OBS, Manzanar National Historic Site between Lone Pine and Independence, the Eastern California Museum in Independence, Darwin and Darwin Falls, and Fossil Falls.

Approximately 90 miles south of Lone Pine on 395 (and then continuing on SR 14 beyond where 395 splits off to head to L.A.) is Red Rock Canyon State Park. Great colorful rock formations, and nice panoramic views from the tops of those formations (although certainly nowhere near as high as Whitney, but nonetheless, well worth the relatively short hike to the tops of these). I also enjoy the drive along the base of the east side of the Sierra all along here, too -- one of my favorite all-time sections of road.

You will definitely gather a ton of information from the book "Gem Guides Guide to Highway 395: Los Angeles to Reno"
by Ginny Clark
List Price: $16.95

(info from AMAZON)

I believe this is a newer, updated version of the book I have that is filled with info on just about everything along 395.

Oh yes - Darwin is definitely worth the visit. Home of "The World's Hottest Phone Booth". Believe it or not, there is some really good art on display and it's all free. One of the most BIZARRE, but interesting, places you will ever see.

There's a Galen Rowell photography gallery in Bishop. There are a number of hot springs on the east side of the sierras.

i could direct u to some stellar natural hot springs in the mammoth area where topless women can be found in abundance... wait why would i do that? maybe u could bribe a local to spill the beans, but don't count on it.

i hear there's some salt flats south of lone pine.

Devil's Postpile is a little further north, but worth the trip. If you can travel a little further (ok, maybe a lot), Yosemite/Tuolome is one of the most beautiful places in the west.
