Not to beat a dead hydration horse but I've recently bought and tried Gookinaid and am totally sold on the stuff.Thank you uscdad.I've been trying it on my bike rides and took it with me this weekend to hike the Marion Mountain trail and wow what a difference.Its going with me to Baldy next weekend,Mono Pass the weekend after and on to Mt.Whitney.I'm not exactly sure whats in it, but it keeps me going and going and going..........check it out

Gookinade has more potassium than many other sports drinks. That can make a big difference in mental fatigue in addition to muscle fatigue.

Hi!

Lots of good information and passion. :-)
Just a few comments:

Hydration packs are good as you find that you will sip often which is a good way to offset your water losses. I personally find it hard to try to gulp massive amounts of plain water during a break in a climb. Also, a hydration bladder weighs less than a bunch of Nalgene bottles.

Gatorade-Koolaid or different types of gels....you've got to try them out under the actual conditions and see what works. Some climbers have used sticks of butter and dark chocolate. Viesturs likes Koolaid. Some sports gels give a friend instestinal problems. I personally cannot stand Cytomax.

Read this entire thread, understand the medical aspects and then go experiment as your diet and your physiology are unique.

I used to use the heavier plastic hydration bladders. I had frozen the water solid in the bladder and when I ran, it formed a sharp bottom edge, cut open the bottom of the bladder and water began pouring out the bottom. I switched to the Camelbak turquoise polyurathane bladder and have had no trouble running with it frozen. It's so tough, I've used it for years with no problem.

As some have mentioned in the above replies, find whatever works for you. No two people are the same. I personally prefer water. I get my nutrients from the food I ingest. Speaking of the unusual though, I have a friend who is a national caliber cyclist in his age group. He swears up and down that the best drink he has found is "Sunny D-Light" (spelling-?) dilluted with three parts water to 1 part S.D.L. I wouldn't argue with him or Viesturs! They're out of my league!
