I am thinking about climbing Whitney at the end of April. Like the other gentleman a few days ago, I have little winter climbing experience (close to none), since my usual hiking partner, my wife, doesn't like winter conditions... Now that she is well into her pregnancy, I want to give it a shot with my friend. Altitude and distance are of less concern, but snow & ice, I am a little worried. But I think I will probably go. (I've been carrying my 3-4 season tent during summer all this time, and I feel like I need to justfy the extra weight and price at times like this^^.) I guess there will no water at trail camp?

I have a question about the permit before May 1st. If I am coming down on the 1st of may, I do not need reserved permit? And... do I self-issue a permit at the ranger station @ Lone Pine?

Thank you.

Reservations in advance are not required when you will be going. Just go by the forest service in Lone Pine and get your permit.
