A friend and I had wanted to get out for the weekend, but were undecided where. Saturday morning we selected the North Fork area, and would see what evolved. We figured probably either Russell or Peak 13,920+ (west of Russell). We eventually settled on Russell via the South Face. Camp was about halfway between UBS and Iceberg Lakes.

On Saturday, as we passed Iceberg Lake about 7:45, we could see a party ascending the first pitch of Whitney's East Buttress. They were going very slowly.

We went over Whitney-Russell Col and traversed to the chute below the south face. I wasn't feeling too perky and was holding Paul back, so turned around at 13,500'. Unfettered, he summited about ½ hour later. Paul reported very little snow in the final chimney below the crest, and almost none on the back side. The last register entry was 1 October.

I got back to Iceberg Lake around 12:15, and waited for Paul. I passed the time watching the East Buttress party. They were still at the elevation of the first pitch, but now way off-route to the right. It looked like they were stuck. But when Paul reached me a half hour later, they had started to rappel into the Mountaineer’s Route chute.

Another friend, Dan, with his dog Reesie, joined us for the first day only. At UBS Lake they peeled off to climb Thor by the Smiley Face route, and descended the SE couloir.

The temperature Saturday night got down to 25 degress.

Bob,

I was interested in possibly climbing Russell from the North Ridge (via the Cleaver col.) Did Paul take any pictures of the north ridge and when he says, "almost none on the back side" what exactly does he mean? Back-up plan (as well as descent) is the route you guys took but I wanted to try something new for this Friday. thx

Tom

Thanks for the quick reply. Wishful thinking on my part -- we did the Whitney switchbacks 9 days ago and they were certainly more challenging then the South Face Right Side will be. Another good indicator is your friend Dan who tried to do the Class 3 approach on Thor but bailed out for the Smiley Face due to snow.

Tom, you can get a couple of different perspectives of the North Ridge of Russell in this album:

Richard,

Thanks for the pictures -- #22 is a great view. After talking with Bob B and looking at your pictures, we're going to go for it.

Legatjoe,

We'll be leaving the Portal probably about 4AM. I don't know your experience level but this is a non-traditional route on Russell and crampons/ax are manditory. Expect minimum cl.3 effort and possible unsuccessful summit bid if conditions aren't right. North Fork should be fun in the dark as well.

I'm going to be on Whitney on Friday...

Still tossing and turning as to whether I want to go up the North Fork and down the MT. If I do, I'll see you guys until you split off for the Cleaver Col as I'm planning on a 4:00am wake up call... probably on the trail by 4:10-4:15am.

Glad the photos were useful.

If you're up on Russell while I'm still on Whitney, I'll try and get some phtots.

Joe joined Gordon and myself in a 16 hour epic up the North Ridge of Mt Russell. We ascended the Carillon creek valley above LBL and hopped over the Cleaver Col. While Gordon & Joe dropped down to Tulainyo Lake, I scrambled up The Cleaver. We met at the top of the gentle part of the north ridge to begin the real climbing. What should have been a 1 hour class 3 scramble turned into a 3 hour ordeal due to insufficient route data and snow. Descent from the peak took longer due to fatigue and loss of daylight. Headlamps from 1000ft above UBL to the portal. Exciting stuff! Trip Report
