Doug rference this incident in his 2026 post.

A hiker has been found dead after attempting to climb Mount Whitney in California despite their companion turning back.

At around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, “while near the 12,500-foot elevation, one hiker determined it was safest to turn around and descend," per a release from a local search & rescue group, though the second hiker continued on and ultimately died.

“After a thorough search, the subject was located on the north face of Mount Whitney, below the “Final 400” on the Mountaineers Route, and was confirmed deceased,” officials said. They did not reveal the person's identity

Certainly not a difficult accident to understand. By 3:30pm only a few hours of light left. Probably exhausted and perhaps suffering from altitude. Heavy winter mountaineering boots not great for the Final 400. Probably some snow and ice on the rocks. No ability to belay solo. There seem to have been a few of the 'Should have had ice axe and crampons' comments. Probably did, but what good what they have done on that section?

Very sad. One person had the wisdom to see that it was an overly ambitious climb. The other did not and paid for it.

Anotber bummer...

Since you asked...it is winter...15 degree low at 10k (from HM sensor) you difinitely wouldn't be comfortable in regular trail shoes...3 1/2 ft at HM...just under 3 at Crabtree...depending on wind loading, the Final 400' could be a snow/ice climb now...or, it could be mixed hell/experts only terrain...
