Plan ahead- the annual Death Valley ultramarathon is coming up.

The Badwater Ultra (135 miles) will be taking place starting at the Badwater parking area Monday, July 15th, at 8 PM, and will work it’s way north on Badwater Road & SR 190- exiting the park by Wednesday, July 17th, at 3 AM near Lone Pine.

Plan on multiple vehicles pulling on and off the west bound side of the road. Visitors are asked to use caution and to slow down when encountering runners and vehicles off the side of the road.
• Please do not slow or stop on the road to take photos. If you wish to take photos, please pull completely off the road surface and do not stand in the road.
• Please plan your visit accordingly.
• Use caution and pass runners slowly and with care.
• Please be patient and travel safely.

Current temperature is 115 at 4:00pm, with overnight low of mid 80's. Same for the next couple days.

I ran Badwater once. It was tough. I was standing by the Badwater Basin sign taking a selfie and a wasp started buzzing my face. I had to run to my car. The temps were incredibly warm for January, too...

Yoshiko Ishikawa of Japan has gone though 90 miles 40 minutes ahead of Pete Kostelnick's pace in 2016 when he ran the course record of 21:56.

The first female runner, Patrycja Bereznowska of Poland, is now in third, just behind second place.

Doug, I hope the Finish Line gets set up next to the Store this year before the first finisher comes in, so he does not have to go into the Store to get directions!

Yes, Hightinerary is the Ricky Jay of bird tricks. See him slice a watermelon in half with a well-thrown chickadee. (That alone is worth the price of admission...)

Nice video on the Washington Post website of Yoshiko finishing, then dropping to his knee to propose to his girlfriend. Girlfriend accepts proposal.

Have seen proposal (as well as actual wedding) 6,000 feet above on the Summit, but never before at the the Trail Head. But then, I guess he is 8,000 feet above Badwater after his 135 mile run.

Patrycja from Poland was second overall. She destroyed the female course record and almost broke 24 hours.

Strong runners this year spreads were close all day .Runners coming up the road in a solid line. This year strong first and second records will pressure the base next year. Could see below 20 hours in a few years.
