Good god, man! Don't you ever rest?!

So, we did a nice walk around the elbow of California on Saturday and ended up at Jalama Beach where they've been touting the "best burger" for quite a while. Having never had the pleasure---and feeling a little depleted of protein---six of us tucked in. It was fine, almost a carbon copy of the Tommy's in San Pedro that I was weened on but heavy on the secret sauce, which was like every other secret sauce, but with 1/3 of the ketchup and a dose of dill. The main comment was "Yeah, it's not bad---but it ain't no Portal Burger™..." (And since they trademark theirs, I might as well set precedent and trademark the Portal's here, you know, for future litigation and all.) All of that aside, I'm not going to ask the question that everyone else will be asking below, other than: "Where's a good place to get potato water?" But really sad to hear that all the creeks and the pond inlet have dried up and the falls are just flowing sand now. I was told I was going to die from drinking out of the creeks "au naturel," and damn if I'm still waiting (though I'm wearing more clothes). Ok, see you this weekend probably.

They lured the chickens into the cans with bits of miner's lettuce.

Hey, I got one of those in the "tall green can"...bet the chicken inside is greener...nothing like time marinated chicken...I dare not open it...hazmat...maybe mashed avocado consistency...vultures would probably heave...

I don't feel like creating a new post...

I get the "what the heck happened to you" look from a number of the people I run into on the rare occasion that I show up in the mountains...

Here's an explanation...

Some people think I freaked out after the unplanned bivy on Whitney during the 52nd weekend in-a-row... Wow, that was back in '12... but I have done Whitney 18 more times since then...

Some people think I've become a gun nut... Yes, I enjoy long-range, precision shooting because I do have hundreds of square miles prime shooting terrain 15-20 minutes away from the front door...

The real reason is that my wife and I headed on this side journey into the world of elder care for my Mom after I could not stand how pathetic her home health care was.

She lost her battle with Alzheimer's last weekend...

She deserves a Whitney memorial climb from me...
We'll see if the passion for hiking/climbing gets reignited.

I wish the WPS was serving food.

Richard:

My condolences to you and your family during this difficult time.

"The Light" by Disturbed

Like an unsung melody
The truth is waiting there for you to find it
It's not a blight, but a remedy
A clear reminder of how it began
Deep inside your memory
Turned away as you struggled to find it
You heard the call as you walked away
A voice of calm from within the silence
And for what seemed an eternity
You're waiting, hoping it would call out again
You heard the shadow reckoning
Then your fears seemed to keep you blinded
You held your guard as you walked away

When you think all is forsaken
Listen to me now (all is not forsaken)
You need never feel broken again
Sometimes darkness can show you the light

An unforgivable tragedy
The answer isn't' where you think you'd find it
Prepare yourself for the reckoning
For when your world seems to crumble again
Don't be afraid, don't turn away
You’re the one who can redefine it
Don't let hope become a memory
Let the shadow permeate your mind and
Reveal the thoughts that were tucked away
So that the door can be opened again
Within your darkest memories
Lies the answer if you dare to find it
Don't let hope become a memory

When you think all is forsaken
Listen to me now (all is not forsaken)
You need never feel broken again
Sometimes darkness can show you the light, beautiful

Sickening, weakening
Don't let another somber pariah consume your soul
You need strengthening, toughening
It takes an inner dark to rekindle the fire burning in you
Ignite the fire within you

When you think all is forsaken
Listen to me now (all is not forsaken)
You need never feel broken again
Sometimes darkness can show you the light

Don't ignore, listen to me now (all is not forsaken)
You need never feel broken again
Sometimes darkness
Can show you the light...

Great spending time with you on Sunday seemed like most of the family was here, camp managers from the late 90's, Jack and Betsy, Kendall and his son Doug's best friend and ski drifter! Kendall worked at the store , ran the counter for some years Becky, Mya ,Cayden and Robin brought pizza and we had time to sit and share the day . Thank you Richard for sharing the day.

Jack and I enjoyed meeting your mom and sharing a breakfast with you both at the WPS back in 2012. It was great to see you back at the Portals. We are very sorry for your loss. Blessings, Betsy

Bets and I will be there before you know it. Just leave the cardboard stack up, I will take care of it. I'm sure my green box knife is tucked away in a store drawer.

I don't know Jack: Ed is working the crowd trying to discourage S&R Biz , and another source is selling Diamox even if you plan to drive by Whitney! And then don't say a word about the brogans you plan to wear!

All the above are great resources , lively comments at times but good to share different thoughts.

Bears moving around the Portal now , this is the normal cycle people come they bring food . they leave food out or in the cars, trucks on the tables in the packs out at night .The bears get food they stay. No food they leave .

The inside of the chute is north facing but I think Mark calculated it is only 700' and somewhat low angle till the top.I would try it with a snow cover , might make it easier??

You know how it works out here someone says they did it in the snow and car to car in 4 hours , the rest will beat a trail in breaking the time!
