Hi all, I'm camping at Lone Pine Campground on the weekend of 4/27. I have a few questions and I would appreciate if any of you know.
1) I know as now the Whitney Portal campground has absolutely no water to offer to campers. You need to bring water for everything. Cooking, cleaning etc. Do you know if The Long Pine Campground has the same issue? Its not on the reservation america campground as it is for the Whitney Portal but I was wondering since it it right below it.
2)Have any of you hiked from the Long Pine campground to the Whitney Portal? I heard there is a hiking trail but not much more than that. If so any tips
3) Will the Whitney Portal Store be already open to the public on that weekend?
4) Lastly have any of you hiked to Meysan Lakes from the Portal area? If so do I need a permit? Any tips?
Thank you in advance

I do not believe you need a permit to day hike Meysan Lakes trail. It is not in the Whitney Zone, so it should be subject to the normal Inyo NF rules. You would need a permit for an overnight. This shows the Whitney Zone, which is subject to special rules. https://www.recreation.gov/nrso/ca/mtwh/MTWH.pdfI have hiked down the trail most of that way. I have not hiked up it. It is pretty, with some nice water features, but that would add a lot of distance. Also, LP campground is likely a bit warmer than the portal. If it were me, I'd probably stay at the Portal and bring the water.....

Meysan Lake trail is north facing and has heavy snow coverage further up the trail. Climbs 3800 feet in 6 1/2 miles. Too early in the year to be a casual hike.
The National Recreation Trail from LP campground starts at the southern moraine across from the toilets at the far end of the campground (there is a sign) and goes for 4 miles to Whitney Portal. Pleasant hike but climbs 2600 feet.

I was thinking to do a day hike to Whitney portal one day and from the portal to meysan another day however with the info I just got from Andyc; Meysan hike is not going to be happening this time.

As to the NRT, if you are hiking up the trail, that is, from LP campground to the Portal, after crossing Meysan Creek, the trail parallels the creek for about 20 meters before switching back. When you come to this switchback, notice that there is a "use" trail that heads into the canyon for about 10 meters. There is a very nice waterfall there.

Reception depends on carrier service. For me, I head up to the Portal Memorial Weekend and at other times. I have a flip phone and service can be random, however, when I need to access my service, I just walk down the road a quarter mile where there is a direct line of sight to Lone Pine and the service is 100%.
I've used my flip phone on top of Whitney. As long as line of sight to the Owens Valley is available, I haven't had a problem.
Anyway, other people may have better luck with more efficient smart phones than I do.

Depends on atmospherics and signal blockage due to trees, large rocks, canyons, etc. That being said I've gotten a signal with my cheapo Trac-Fone at LP campground, Whitney Portal, LP lake, and near trail camp. I've heard of others getting a signal at the top of Mt. Whitney.
All depends on how badly your signal wants to find the nearest cell tower:)

I've never had trouble with cell service at Lone Pine Campground. I have a tracfone which takes advantage of what ever cell service is available in the area.
The campground sits below the average terrain so you may have to move to a higher elevation for better service.
It's been a few years since I last stayed there (at the tent sites) so I don't recall water being available at them. There is plenty of water flowing thru the nearby creek though.
