I saw a news item on CNN that some group wants to bring grizzly bears back to the Sierra.

Quote:
"We think it's possible to bring the grizzly back," said Jeff Miller with the Center for Biological Diversity.

The organization has launched an online petition drive urging state and wildlife officials to consider the feasibility of bringing back the grizzly, which can get up to nearly a 1,000 pounds. About 20,000 people have signed it.

I assume that none of the 20,000 signing the petition are hikers.

Hi Richard, l am one hiker who would support the reintroduction of grizzlies in the Sierra. They belong there. I would make the same adjustments l made when hiking in Montana - l would put a bear bell on my pack and carry a pepper spray cannister. If the price of my hiking is that native animals have to be removed for my comfort (or, in this case, not reintroduced to their natural habitat) that's too high a price. It also contradicts my idea of what it means to go to wilderness.

Now if they could get rid of mosquitoes....
