31ruecambon,

Thanks for passing along this news. With Norman Clyde's birthday approaching next week, our thoughts recently turned to Glen, then the remaining living member of the first ascent team of the East Face route on Mt Whitney (1931).

Glen Dawson (as well as his brother Muir Dawson) where also on the team to make the first ascent of Mt Whitney by the East Buttress route (1937).

Thanks to the Sierra Club members who helped train the soldiers of the Tenth Mountain Division (WWll) to climb and ski.

Jim

I saw him speak about the Whitney East Face 1st Ascent at Eastern California Museum in Independence several years ago and he recall a bunch of details.
Even in his late 90s, he was sharp as a tack.......and always smiling (I’ll try and post some photos)
Incredible man that lead a full life, Kudos Glen cool

Glen Dawson is a legend in the Sierra mountaineering world. He was a great guy I had the pleasure of meeting. I gave a presentation as part of a birthday party the American Alpine Club threw for him back in 2003. I've seen many articles published over the past week since his passing on March 22 at 103 years old. Here's a nice one from Alpinist Magazine.
