Come one, come all! It's the 5th Annual Alabama Hills Day celebration with tours, hiking, climbing, cycling, off-roading, and everything else that makes the Hills great.

Over forty different sponsors/exhibitors will be lending their support for the Alabama Hills at the Interagency Visitor Center in Lone Pine from 9am to 3pm. The Lone Pine Museum of Film History will also host a variety of exhibits, films and lectures for the general public to enjoy and be educated about this fantastic natural landscape. Various field trips and stewardship events for all ages will also be taking place in the Alabama Hills themselves.

More info and schedule of events to come, but block that weekend off, as there will also be a volunteer project on Sunday, April 10th, along with a hike.

For camping, there’s Tuttle Creek Campground just south of the Alabama Hills off Horseshoe Meadow Road: (http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/bishop/camping/tuttle.html). There’s also primitive, dispersal camping throughout the Alabama Hills (no amenities other than the setting and the views; don’t leave any trash or tromp on the vegetation, either).

The Whitney Portal Hostel offers private rooms and shared rooms, all with private showers and baths in town: http://www.mountwhitneyportal.com/

We'll post more info here and there's a main event page here: https://www.facebook.com/events/853343981461055/

For the February 6th Trail day, I stayed at Tuttle Creek campground for 3 days. Cost, $5 per day, unless you have a pass, such as a senior citizen pass, then, the cost is $2.50. Check water availablity on their website....during February, the water was turned off. This was not an issue since I bought several gallons of water at the store. Restrooms are open.

I found out later, through Thomas, the supervisor for several Inyo campgrounds that the Lone Pine campground, was open, but the water was not on. There was no charge for staying there.

Now, if you plan or do stay at the Lone Pine campground, take into considerations, the Portal road closure schedule. The schedule could impact you coming and going.

For Tuttle, there are 2 ways to get to and from the campground to the city, or elsewhere.

Its my understanding that the road construction schedule does not occur on Friday. Can someone verify this. If so, I may head over to the Lone Pine campground Thursday evening. Its a much better location, with trees and all.

The lone Pine campground, officially is not taking reservations until April 22. However, the campground is open, except no water and no camp host. First come first serve........

When I was there February 6th, only a portion of the campground was open. This amounted to 15 or so sites, and, most sites were taken as people arrived and left.

The nice thing about Lone Pine campground is that there are trees, vegetation, and sits around 6200 feet. A view of Mt Whitney....

Tuttle is open, sage brush, only a couple trees. It can get hot and dusty, depending.

Hi Paul, food (and music) will be at the Smokehouse at 6:00 on Saturday. I haven't heard of any food happenings at the Hostel, but Doug can confirm.

Hi Checking to see what the weather will be this weekend? OK so we have had clouds no rain and 10 MFI (10 million flowers per inch all the colors are showing now!) days are hitting high 70's so cooling will make the tours without the risk of heat stroke! But what would Kansas West be without that slight breeze we get.
OK I have no clue about the weather , All events are still planned with some thoughts on the Bike ride, If you have a fat tire option that would help on one of the option rides, We will have a ride for everyone , I will lead the ride some walk a lot option !

See everyone this weekend ( bring a Jacket) and cash we have a drawing for gear and some very nice Photos , guided trip to Whitney
from SMC and much more.

Peter Croft 4 PM speaking at the Lone Pine Film Museum on Sat.
and Kathy Jefferson Bancroft 11 AM (Family is past owner of the Portal Store) 1 PM Chris Langley and Bob Sigman talking about one of the local ranches that provided sets and promotion for early filming .

Sunday work Projects and long hike I promised to do the trail with all the link ups many have worked on. So We will start Near Lone Pine Camp ground and into town about 10 miles, we could sneak in a down hill from the Portal if wanted ???? Jack loves this hike on his trip to the summit from town and back he choose that route. Hint we took out the 10,000' gain near town .Jack might finish the trail walk this summer or maybe he likes waving at the cars , I recall Shin stopping and asking if he was OK?

Thanks for coming in advance check the flyer as many things are planned a full weekend of things to do and meet many of the NGO'S and groups that do many great things in the region.

Sounds like a great weekend coming up. Someday (soon) Bets and I are going to make this a regular happening . At the moment still stuck in San Diego.

Remember a hike with Doug is always a great adventure, just make sure you keep him pointed in the right direction. Keep working on the trail, I promise to use it this summer.

PS. If parking is going to be a problem this year you can always do your Whitney day hike from town, it's long but beautiful.

Crazy Jack
