Yes, that is a very nice picture of Whitney. It is too large though which makes it difficult to enjoy the whole scope of it when I have to scroll back and forth. How about posting it a bit smaller. It also took quite a while to load, if you make it half the size that should help too.
Where was it taken?

"Here is a nice picture of Mt. Whitney. If anyone else has some pictures of the area post them."

I took this from my home in Victorville this morning at sunrise. As I'm not familiar with this area yet, I'm having a hard time identifying which of the peaks is Whitney. If any of you folks know please clue me in (white peak to the left of the larger one in the foreground??)....

CaT, Go to the "game plan needed for an April climb" thread and scroll down to the bottom, I asked the same question yesterday. Bob R was nice enough to explain it to me, you should be able to get the gist of of it too. Basically it works like this if you don't have your own domain: you find a picture you like, right click on the picture, scroll down to properties and left click, highlight and copy the email address, go to the message board here, paste the copied website address onto your relpy screen, place < img src= in front of the http//: and a > after .jpg( don't leave a space in between the < and img, I just did that so the website didn't try to make a link),go to Preview Post and your picture should show up. Now, I have no idea how to enlarge or shrink pictures to fit better, maybe Bob can answer that one too.Good Luck.

The image in the first post of this topic is stunning. Posting images like that on this or other message boards requires some tricks to do effectively. The HTML basics for posting an image were already covered, but I want to add a few other tips and techniques that might prove useful.

(1) Most digital cameras capture images too large to post directly to the Internet. I routinely edit photos and adjust the resolution before posting on the Internet or sending via email. A good rule of thumb is to shoot for an image size around 50 Kbytes. There are a number of software tools that can be used to do this. My personal favorite is Corel PhotoPaint, but I admit this is probably overkill for most users. With this, or similar software, I can crop out unwanted parts of the photo, eliminate red eye, change the color balance, and convert the photo to an optimal .jpg resolution. This latter part is done by coverting the file to jpg (jpeg) format and experimenting with the compression parameters until I find a near optimal point of resolution and file size.

(2) Sharing images with friends via email is pretty straight forward. Sharing them with the world requires a little work. This is done by placing the image where any person can see it. Generally speaking, other Internet users cannot view images on your personal computer. These images must be located someplace on the web where people can access them at any time. These images should be uploaded to a website like Clubphoto or you can store images on a personal Yahoo account. There are also a number of other sites where your images can be hosted.

(3) Before clicking the "Add Reply" button you can test your post to see if images or other HTML features are working using the "Preview Post" button.

(4) If you are curious about HTML code, you can visit sites like <a href=http://www.htmlprimer.com/>HTML Primer</a> or in Internet Explorer you can view the source code by selecting View from the main menu and the Source option. I picked up quite a bit using the latter approach, but I will admit that it is not for the faint of heart.

Hi,
Maybe my system is configured exactly or perhaps I just got lucky but the first picture came through fine. In fact, I am now using it as my desktop background. Great work!! It loaded quickly too. I am using broadband (Surewest) and I'm sure that had something to do with the ability to see it in seconds. Keep them coming as I usually change about every month. Keeps things fresh.

Bob R, thanks for the resizing info, just what I needed.

Marksor,I thought Surewest DSL was the fastest thing out there, that is, until I got a Comcast cable modem. It absolutely blows DSL out of the water, and it's cheaper too. Technology sure can be grand. Does anyone remember the stone age days of 56k or worse, 28k?

Here is another picture that I like of the switchbacks up to Trail Crest:

I resized and made it my desktop also, absolutely beautiful.
Man, I first used a 300 baud modem. I still remember buying a 2400 and having the fastest connection of anyone I worked with.

ED,
I resized the first picture so hopefully it will show up for you now.
Is the above picture of the switchbacks showing up for you? It is for me.
Here is another picture that I found from the same website. I gotta start downloading my own pictures, I hope this sort of thing isn't illegal. I guess once you post an image on the internet it kinda becomes free territory.

Does anyone know where these pictures are being taken from? I was thinking from the top of one of the larger Alabama Hills rock formations. He's obviously using a large lense, probably a 300-400mm.

Joe Schmoe: That photo is probably of some peak in the lower Sierra, but it is not shaped right to be Whitney. It is shaped kind of like Olancha peak, but that is over 100 miles from Victorville
Also the mountains just left drop off to a much lower elevation, which is not true within 30 miles of Whitney itself.. It is a nice snow capped peak, whatever it is.

Stryder: You are right. Those photos are taken from some highpoint in the Alabama hills with a large Telephoto lens. That look like you are about as high as the mountains is not possible if you get too close (like at the portal).

Is it because of the pictures in this particular message thread that the corresponding text is not wrapping like normal so that you end up having to scroll back and forth to read the text?

Joe Schmoe - Which direction were you facing when you took the picture from your home in Victorville, and also, which side of town do you live in (N, NE, E, SE, etc.)?

For Joe Schmoe, the peak in the center looks like Piute Mountain at 8,435 ft. and about 87 miles from your house, over towards Lake Isabella. The snow-topped mountain to the left is Mt. Pinos, at 8,831 feet and 107 miles away, the highest peak in the Las Padres National Forest. Mt. Whitney is to the RIGHT of your center mountain by about 23 compass degrees and 150 miles away. Mt. Whitney cannot be seen from your area. For california-trailwalker, the center mountain is northwest (about 315 degrees TN, or 302 degrees MN) of Joe's house.

THANKS! everyone.

Eventually I'll get around to buying a decent map (the one I have is 1:150,000) and compass. As it is I spend WAY too much time scanning the area with binocs to get the lay of the land.

My goal is to find out where that last little bit of snow-covered mountain (third one on the left) is. It's probably up the crest a ways... Compared to the smoggy valleys I moved from, the clean hi-desert air never ceases to amaze me.

But, being a little bit of a photographer I feel bad for not being able to post a pic of my own of Mt. Whitney. The best I can do is one from my "backyard".

ENJOY!

While you can use copyrighted stuff for personal use, it is definitely not cool to repost it on your own (or other's) webpage without permission. That goes beyond "personal use." Why not just give a link to the page with the picture, map, or whatever. That way, if more stuff is added, or the information updated, the reader gets the latest version.

Joe, I think your third peak to the left is Hines Peak (6704 ft.) at 102 miles away. It should be about 255 degrees magnetic north (268 deg. TN) from your location. It is in the Los Padres National Forest. smile

Now, that's a landscape I wouldn't mind waking up to every morning. I just looked on my California map and, wow, you are way out in the middle of nowhere. How long have you lived in Ridgecrest and what made you move there? What kind of temps does Ridgecrest experience in the summer? Are there any large employers in that area, how do people make a living so far removed from the wonderful cities of the LA basin?
Is that Walker Pass behind the chimney in the left of the picture?

Here's a picture to kind of stick with the sunrise/sunset theme. Whitney is a tad left of center, Lone Pine Peak is immediately left of Whitney and Mt.Williamson is on the far right:

Here's one looking towards east from above UBS lake on 2/2/2003. It was nice to see the sunrise after a very long night of very high winds.

Just adding my two cents worth on the sunrise/sunset theme. This sunset above Guitar Lake was taken after a significant thunderstorm last summer (July 28th)on the West side of Whitney. It was one of my favorite pics of the trip!

Thanks to all those of you who have posted ideas on how to get my picture up on this message board. I had no idea how to do it before your input!
