hikealongpete, I went to the Inyo website and looked for that area you mentioned about permits not being necessary. I couldn't find it. Could you post the link to that page? Or cut and paste that section?

Or e-mail me at ansoncom@yahoo.com.

Like I said, I got nothing but grief from the FS over my Whitney video and I'm surprised to hear they may have changed their policies. Remember also that the Whitney trail isn't technically in the Inyo Forest and a different (and more stringent) set of rules apply to wilderness.

ansoncom, go to the us forest service or the inyo forest service website and type: FILM PERMIT into the search box. Open the "When Do I Need a Film Permit" page. About half way down and under the heading it quotes:

Commercial Filming: Motion Pictures, Television Locations, Commercial Videos

A special use permit is required for all Motion Pictures, Feature Films, Television Locations, and Commercial Videos and Documentaries that use actors, models, sets or props and etc.

Permits are not required for filming activities, such as:

·News, and gathering of news related stories.

·Other types of documentaries not requiring the use of actors, models, sets, or props. (end of quote)

---I don't believe that my shadow, visible a few times on the rocks, will make me an actor. (Maybe I qualify as a shadow of an actor???) And, my hand-held camera with a few attachments is not a set or prop. Did'nt use any models either, darn!

Sorry you did'nt do your project. I believe, no impact, genuine nature filming or, as in my case, a "visual trailguide", would bring more awareness and enjoyment to others.P>

hikealongpete, thanks for the directions to the website. Wish I had seen that during my discussions with the FS. It would have saved me some grief -- but the outcome probably would have been the same.

As a member of the "news media" I was allowed up Whitney with a photog and camera to produce a story for Fox. Were I to sell that video now... that would be a different use altogether. It's splitting hairs, I know.

In any event, congratulations on your video. Did you hand hold it all the way up? That's amazing! My photog used a small digital camera that we took in and out of his backpack when needed. That in itself was chore.

Neat videos. He also has Grand Canyon videos.

I grabbed a link to eBay, <a href="http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=hikealongpete&include=0&since=-1&sort=3&rows=50" target="ebay">click here</a> to see everything that <a href="http://cgi2.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=hikealongpete&item=-1&frompage=1236&de=off" target="ebay">HikeAlongPete</a> currently has for sale on eBay.

There are currently some Whitney Trail videos for sale.

Pete, are you able to transfer these to DVD and sell them that way? VHS has become so 1990s wink

I wonder if, for the most part, such a VHS or DVD might be preaching to the choir.

I'm glad to see folks enjoyed it, my mind is in replay just thinking about it.

I bought these videos for myself. As others have reported, the quality is surprisingly good. How do you know when you've spent too much time on Whitney? When you start recognizing individual rocks!

Very cool videos! Worth every cent. I wish there had been atleast a little commentary though.

We summited in '78 and it was wonderful reliving that adventure.

Thanks,
David

We just finished watching the videos. We agree with everyone who said the quality is very good. Heck, we didn't even mind the music! Definitely worth the price.

whitneyaddict,

Thanks for thinking about my DVD. I had a great time making it. I kept it pertinent to what's involved and included bits of historical things to round it out. To HikeAlongPete, congrats on taking all the video and making something out of it. It's not easy!

In regards to the permits, etc. In preparing my production, I called the National Park Service. They issue those permits to control the impact to the environment and to other park visitors. They didn't have a problem with what I was doing since I was using a handheld camcorder. No generators, no vehicles, no lights, no backdrops, no film crews, and no caterers. (A caterer sounds pretty good, doesn't it?) Pretty much common sense, a rarity these days it seems.
