I don't know if anyone has seen this, but Congresswoman Judy Chu (D Pasadena) wants the President to declare parts of the San Gabriel Mtns. as a National Monument. This is under her bill HR4858. She wants him to do this as an Executive Order. While this may sound like a good idea, it gives the government more control of our lands. This could put limits on usage. How about a lottery for Baldy?? Check this out.

I too question it a bit. I am somewhat familiar with the idea, but it has been very hard to get information about what the designation really means. The San Gabriels are awesome but the majority of the area works well now so I doubt that they are trying to fix anything.

Here is some more information on the National Monument Article

I'm not too excited about this type of process as an executive order with only limited input. There are too many unanswered questions and even if it is the greatest idea ever, I'd rather see dialogue and consensus building rather than executive orders. I love the wilderness but am really starting to question my vote in 2012. What I am sure about is the beauty of the San Gabriels.

Yea, according to the news he is supposed to sign it today. I love how he makes the democratic process work.

Discussion of the San Gabriel region has been going on for decades. As just one example of the many processes that have been ongoing:

The area includes portions of the Angeles National Forest, as well as many communities along the San Gabriel River. Many people, organizations, and agencies are working to conserve resources in this area to provide recreational opportunities, habitat restoration, watershed improvement, and flood protection. This study builds upon and complements the efforts that are underway.

The NPS completed this task in April 2013 after a decade of soliciting public participation. This kind of study has defined the basis of the implementation that was signed off.

The discussions of the San Gabriel have involved many local and user groups that have spent years pushing towards what has finally been done. These are groups of people that participate in the political process up front, like Doug Sr in the Alabama Hills all these years.

And the process isn't over for people who care to be involved. How things will be affected in the San Gabriel is still to be determined. Now that a direction has been selected, attention can focus on the agency actually selected.

I saw in the newspaper that Mt. Baldy and Wrightwood would be excluded from the plan. Let's hope!

The choice of National Monument status and the location of the boundary concentrates on backcountry areas of federal lands and avoids your favorite areas of high density and commercial developments.
