Mt. Whitney Portal Store & Hostel Forums General Mt. Whitney Portal Store Message Board Crazy(or is it typical?) Sierras weather 9/8

We had dayhike permits for 9/8 and like many others, had to turn around due to weather.

I finished the High Sierra Trail on the 8th. The walk down to the portal that morning was an amusing one. It looked as if folks had decided to play strip poker on the trail. I could easily have collected an entire ensemble from the discarded wet gloves, parkas, pants...!

I'd say that weather isn't typical but it isn't that uncommon either and certainly not crazy.

Coming down toward the Portal one September we saw almost everything you would need to hike whitney. I wish I'd taken photos of it all. There were hats, a shirt, a sweater, shorts, pants, underwear, two pairs of socks, shoes and boots, a water bottle and two perfectly good hiking poles. These items weren't together. They were in various unrelated locations between Trail Camp and the Portal.
