My Wife is going on her first multi-night BP trip, with some friends, to the Bishop Pass area the latter part of August. She asked me to ask a few questions here, due to me always telling her how much good information can be found on this message board.

First, what is the marmot situation in that area? Average, bad, etc.?

Second, she wants a recommendation on good, lightweight, rain gear.

Third, good, lightweight camp shoes?

Fourth, while some of the others in her group have been there in the past, does anyone have suggestions on things to see while there?

Thanks in advance for all your answers.

First, the average marmot situation IS bad. They are evil geniuses and require more care than bears. They can get in smaller spaces, quicker, with less fear. And they are cute as hell. Just assume you are accompanied by smart, hungry cats.

Second, I go with packable coated, non technical fabric, because it is lighter, much cheaper, and most of the time not on for long stretches , maybe an hour or two at a time. Not worth spending big bucks.

Third, camp shoes. Depends on what she is hiking in. If already in light hikers or trail runners, another shoe is a complete luxury. Bare feet. Dirty socks. Duct tape. If she is in mountaineering boots, then Crocs, Keds, running shoes, flipflops, will be a relief, and relatively light.

Fourth, things to see. This, my friend, will take care of itself.

I am a female backpacker and do not leave home without my camp shoes!

I love the older version of Crocs Mary Janes. They have moveable straps and can be found at some of shoe consolidation websites.

I took my sister on her first backpack last month and gifted her a pair. She was glad to have had them with her.

They feel great after a day on the trail and are worth every ounce!
