What is your favorite reservable campsite at portal? I remember some being nicer than others.. Thanks for input!

Hi Site 42,43 large and you will see bears about everynight heading to the main feeding grounds that would be sites 1-38,Each year first time campers to the area will leave things out and this starts the cycle , the Bears will return for a check of each site and by mid June the pattern is locked in. The signs , the warnings and the stories are not just place holders for another sign or story.

The bears will stay as long as they get food, very simple fact no food - no bears. This also means they will travel to find food and that could be Lone Pine Campground or the houses in the Alabama Hills or town. So as you drive in the area watch for deer and bears on the move, also many smaller night travlers to watch for .

The lower area Camp sites also offer privacy since you are on a dead end road. Avoid 39, and 40,
