On Saturday (8/10/13) I decided to hike Candlelight Peak, since I needed to be home by early evening Candlelight seemed to fit the bill perfectly. It's not to long a hike (12/13 miles round trip), water on route, the promise of great views and no permit needed for dayhiking. And although I had not climbed this peak before, I knew the trail well and made good time reaching Meysan Lake and then ascending to the ridge between Mount Irvine and Candlelight. I shouldn't have been surprised to see so many "bumps" on the ridge. Not having any coordinates and after some time not seeing any summit register/log I decided to tag everything in sight to make sure I had made the correct summit block.
The high points ranged from 12,000' to 12,272 (by my GPS) the latter of which has an antennae and some kind of solar device.
I recalled hearing that Candlelight is not an officially recognized Peak, and that may be why it is not shown on any of my Topos. Also I had heard that it may not be the highest Peak on the ridge either.
So, with these thoughts in mind and having tagged every high point on the ridge I decided it was time to go home and feed the cat.
To sum up, I think I bagged Candlelight, and even if I didn't it was still a good day, the views of the Whitney area were exceptional, particularly the Main Trail winding its way from Lone Pine Lake to Trail Crest.
If anyone has a fix on the actual summit, I'd be curious to know.

Cheers Phil

The peak with the manmade objects on it was the summit. It used to have a register.

The first result using the Gooble search came up with this: http://www.summitpost.org/candlelight-peak/645489

Sounds like B.S. to me, frankly.

The Oct 14, 1961 entry in the register contains a familar name - Dennis Burge. He's still active in the local (Ridgecrest) Sierra Club chapter.

Photo 30 shows the summit. There's a register in a small plastic jar in the rocks below the lightning rod. It was still there recently.

Dr. Heller's signature is/was in there also... and Some Guy has signed in a few times too.

Thanks Guys,

Hightinery/Jeff, it figures that the peak with the antennae is the summit, as it is also the highest point.

Richard/Kevin, Pity, it looks like I missed out on reading a piece of Sierra folklore. Richard, I think your right the register is probably under the antennae. Oh well, I'll just have to go back and do it again.
