On Saturday (8/10/13) I decided to hike Candlelight Peak, since I needed to be home by early evening Candlelight seemed to fit the bill perfectly. It's not to long a hike (12/13 miles round trip), water on route, the promise of great views and no permit needed for dayhiking. And although I had not climbed this peak before, I knew the trail well and made good time reaching Meysan Lake and then ascending to the ridge between Mount Irvine and Candlelight. I shouldn't have been surprised to see so many "bumps" on the ridge. Not having any coordinates and after some time not seeing any summit register/log I decided to tag everything in sight to make sure I had made the correct summit block.
The high points ranged from 12,000' to 12,272 (by my GPS) the latter of which has an antennae and some kind of solar device.
I recalled hearing that Candlelight is not an officially recognized Peak, and that may be why it is not shown on any of my Topos. Also I had heard that it may not be the highest Peak on the ridge either.
So, with these thoughts in mind and having tagged every high point on the ridge I decided it was time to go home and feed the cat.
To sum up, I think I bagged Candlelight, and even if I didn't it was still a good day, the views of the Whitney area were exceptional, particularly the Main Trail winding its way from Lone Pine Lake to Trail Crest.
If anyone has a fix on the actual summit, I'd be curious to know.
Cheers Phil
