Nothing really noteworthy until up closer to Summit Meadows about 7 miles up the trail.

I was considering heading out in the afternoon on my arrival day to get a jump start on getting up and over the pass. I guess any spot would suffice for that 1st night, it wouldn't have to be the best. That is how I did Shepard Pass, it worked out great. Is Summit Meadow the 1st area where you can set up a camp with water, etc?

There's some unpleasant flats just above where you cross the creek from south to north (trail kind of disappears for a minute on the up-slope. It's not much further to Summit Meadow from there, so I'd push on.

Joe,
If it helps set the image for what Laura and I offered the area was significantly scorched by a fire about six years ago. I still love the area and the destinations this trail lead to but the fire dramatically changed some of the lower sections. Summit Meadows is above the burn area and will provide that visual most expect from the east side trailheads.

Thanks Scott and Laura, I will plan on Summit Meadow. Is that reasonably attainable if I'm starting around mid-dayish?

I certainly think the meadow area is attainable especially with summer daylight times.

There's a nice campsite at about 8500', but it's not close to water. There's a great campsite at 9800' that has a number of good campsites and there is easy access to water. There are also campsites at about 10300' and 10700' before the pass that are close to water.

I went over the pass on Saturday - just a couple small patches of snow before the pass and at the pass. Then there are some large snowfields between the pass and the large Baxter Lake, but they are consolidated and not sun-cupped; so they make travel through that section a pleasure.
