The morning after the Memorial hike, I was invited to go on the Tu-Tu hike that Rosie so graciously organized. Dave and I needed to head back north and I wanted to have the 'pancake breakfast' at Whitney Portal Store. I can NEVER get enough great stories from Doug. So, no Tu-Tu hike for me... A few pix of Sunday morning: Preliminary photo of the Tu-Tu hike with Cory, Rosie, Tracie and Kristine. View of Mt. Whitney from Whitney Portal Road. Doug Thompson in front of his store. Doug, his grandson, me and my husband Dave. Dave's first Whitney Portal Store pancake breakfast. Doug outside the store (Dave asked Doug about all his 'photo ops' over the years; Doug rolled his eyes and smiled). Drive-by shot of the White Mountains as Dave and I headed north toward home...

Excellent, MC! Doug and the WPS - true instititions!
The tutu hike was definitely inspired - way to go Rosie! You should post the shot taken on the E-ledges - that one was truly classic.

Tracie, Rosie, and Kristine: Rosie, with Tracy in background: Tracy, Kristine, Doug, Rosie, and Cory: Cory took these pictures, I'm still in the process of going thru all my pictures. Ha!...I havent even finished unpacking! What a wonderful weekend - the Memorial Hike, the Hostel Potluck... and our first Annual "Tiara and Tutu" hike! I look at those pics on the ledges and it's hard to believe I did it, but Cory was in front showing us the way (she makes it look so easy!) and then Tracy was behind me, encouraging me and giving me help when I needed it... thanks again Tracy! When we got in to the Portal, we looked up and there's Doug with the biggest smile! What a beautiful day!

Wow. Great photos, but is it really that vertiginous? Add Tinkerbell wings to the tutu and I might have a shot. Y'all sure look like you are having fun, though.

Dave's first Whitney Portal Store pancake breakfast. Wow the pancake can't even fit on a plate! Karin, that was the Elephant Ear shortcut that you asked about. It's not as bad as it looks...but the first time can be a little scary if you're not used to that sort of thing.

I can't believe I am saying this, but I think I may want to try this. Seriously. I like the idea of doing the lower part of the MR, no summit pressure, to feel out the route. And heck, wearing a tutu might be just what the doctor ordered to take the edge off my nerves. Though I have nothing in my closet that remotely resembles a tutu, let alone anything in pink.

I should know better than to sign on during the workday. And here I just finished presenting at a panel for female law students on overcoming gender bias in the profession and in oral advocacy. I should have just told them to wear tutus.

There really isn't anybody better at this than the Thompsons. Agreed! I could not let Dave leave the Whitney Zone without the 'pancake breakfast'.

Great pictures everyone, that looked like a day of fun! I'd like to hear the comments the hikers on the trail were thinking.

Karin, we really did have a most wonderful time. There was so much laughter, but it was also such a perfect opportunity to get to know each other better, telling our stories (the happy and sad) and totally enjoying being with each other. I still laugh when I think of all the fun we had a Lower Boy Scout Lake! This was a hike to celebrate just being with each other with no pressures to make miles, peaks, or anything else. I can't begin to express how special this hike was for me. Cory with her sweet smile and calm demeanor, Kristine who was game for everything, and Tracie with her cute laugh and helping me when I was scared... what wonderful hiking partners! And I think you're right... wearing the tutus took the edge off the ledges (no pun intended) I had intended to make the tutus this year but ran out of time so I just bought these, but this type of tutu is REALLY easy to make. We all agreed that this will be an annual event, and this was the perfect time to do it! Rosie

I'd like to hear the comments the hikers on the trail were thinking. "I wonder if that tutu comes in camo?" "It must be tutu day at the ballpark." "So that's a midlayer." "I shoulda brought a bigger binder."
