Hello. So for us "foreigners," smile would appreciate thoughts re what the temperatures and conditions are likely to be next weekend. I am heading South to Los Angeles Tuesday (before heading up 395 on Thursday or Friday),so I am packing now and trying to make sure I have a good range of appropriate equipment. I've checked out some long-range forecasts...looks like colder weather and some precipitation may be in store.

Night time at Horseshoe Meadows: does 15-25 degrees sound about right? (I now think the range is more 20-30 degrees, see post below)

Day time 10,000'-12,000': does 32-42 sound about right?

Thinking of packing miscrospikes, hard shell pants and/or lightweight gaiters, hard shell top/hood, warm hat, and a good variety of insulating layers to choose from on the spot....

I'm looking at those nighttime lows. I don't have gear for camping at those temps. I'm going to get up very early and drive up from LA Saturday morning. Is there a cellphone number I could have for someone who will be at the trailhead in case I have to call?

Please don't change your plans until you hear from folks who really know! I am 350+ miles away, trying to figure this out.

This link shows a forecast for elevation 9,997' in the general area. (You have to scroll down to the 7-day forecast.)

It shows nighttime lows for 23 degrees on Thursday, 27 degrees on Friday, and 28 degrees on Saturday. It is predicting Saturday to be sunny with a high of 42 at this elevation. Though all this could change in the next few days...

Cell phone service is really spotty at Horseshoe Meadows. A recent post had folks saying that they had no service. I actually was able to text, but not call (AT&T), the last time I was there. Someone else was was using AT&T to talk to their mother from their campsite when I was there. The long and short...you can't count on cell service.

That's the same link I have been monitoring. I have been watching the falling temps for the past week but was just moved to post something following your post. I'm a cold sleeper. I would rather get up really early Saturday than spend a night shivering in my tent Friday.

As for phone communications, we'll just leave it that if I'm there at the time everybody's ready to leave great, and if I'm not then I certainly don't expect the group to wait for me.

In any case, I'll be there for the potluck (with some wine).

Hi, all! Looks like we have quite the group growing now, glad to see it. I'm just back from my weekend, and the clouds were definitely gathering and looking more ominous up in Tuolumne last night. (There are a few of us who start giggling with glee at the thought of snow!)

The forecast for the weekend is just starting to take shape, and looking good. It will be cold up there, so plan your layers accordingly. Any accumulation looks to be minimal, but any moisture can make things slick, so we may move slowly so everyone can be comfortable and safe.

We should get the ball rolling no later than 0900 on Saturday, so plan on being up at Horseshoe Meadows by at least 0830. I'll park the TOF as close to the trailhead as I can: orange Honda Element with a box on top.

The planets just are not lining up for Ashley and I, and regretfully, we will not be able to make it. Peace to all, and make it a memorable day.

Doug - please move me from "maybe" to "going".
Are there folks carpooling up from Hostel to Horseshoe TH. It seems silly to drive 20 vehicles up the road. I will drive up early Saturday morning from R/C.

Hi Tom,
I'll make the changes. I'm driving up too, if you want we can car pool.
Take care.

I just hiked out last night over Cottonwood Pass (8 days in the backcountry) in blowing snow. I reached my car at 7pm and there was about an eight of an inch on the car. It was cold and windy.

Good luck all...... i hope the weather turns better.

Woke up to pouring rain here in town this morning. I know Dad talked about heading up to check conditions, but in case there is something totally amiss, we should have a backup plan of wandering through the Alabama Hills?

I will make one last post here tomorrow, since I'll be seeing patients all day and packing. With the forecast clearing tomorrow, I think we'll be fine.

Yay, snow!!!

Thanks for keeping an eye on this.

I have been wondering what 2-4 inches of snow might do to the road up to Horeshoe Meadows. I love hiking in the snow, but I am driving a VW Passat sedan and am wondering about trailhead access (carrying cable chains, but don't have AWD or 4WD).

My plan was to go up to Horseshoe Meadows Friday morning/afternoon, do a gentle acclimatizing hike with the pup, and camp there overnight. Wondering if the road will be doable for a low clearance sedan before or by Friday afternoon.... Is there a phone number or website where one can find out the condition of the access road?

Alternate plan sounds good if there are road access issues. Otherwise, I am hoping for high country.
